Seaside’s Troop 642 Takes 1st Place in the Tuality District Camporee Dutch Oven Cook-off

Scoutmaster Stan Gandy has reclaimed the top honors for Troop 642 at the Tuality District Camporee Dutch oven cook-off.

This year’s camporee was a Mountain Man theme. So Stan grew out his beard and put together a winning menu for the annual competition.

Parched judges were able to wet their whistle with blueberry iced tea. They then dined on venison back strap filet minion, broccoli pie and smokey sweet potatoes. To finish out their meal they were offered triple berry bread pudding.

Way to go Stan. Thanks for representing Troop 642 and Ft. Clatsop District.

Ft. Clatsop District Eagle Scout Competes on American Ninja Warrior

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA Jackson Meyer, Eagle Scout from Ft. Clatsop Districts Troop 642, will be on an episode of American Ninja Warrior airing Monday, May 25th on NBC.

Jackson is a 2010 graduate of Seaside High School. He has spent many years being involved in both Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts.

Recently Jackson decided to apply to compete on American Ninja Warrior, and was accepted. It was important to Jackson that he represent scouting during the competition. He received permission from both the BSA and NBC to wear his scout uniform on the course in Venice Beach, CA.

Competition started at 430am. Jackson said that he was struck by how much larger the course was than it appears on TV. He was also impressed with how supportive everyone was. During interviews he was able to share some of his scout stories. He hopes to return to the competition next year.

When asked what he would remember most about competing, Jackson said it would be knowing that  a person can do everything they want to. When he applied he didn’t know if he would be accepted, but he applied anyway. His advice for everyone would be for anything in life they should “apply and try”.

Jackson will be graduating from OSU this June. He will have 2 degrees, Fisheries and Wildlife as well as Zoology. He is currently working on a study of the Oregon Slender Salamander to help Weyerhaeuser learn the effects of logging on this sensitive species.

American Ninja Warrior will air Monday, May 25th on NBC at 8pm (Pacific time). http://www.nbc.com/american-ninja-warrior?cid=SEM|nnjwrrr|smmrshws2015|ggl|na|na&hcoref=SEM&WT.srch=ggl&sky=+american%20+ninja%20+warrior&k_clickid=572e5cd6-d845-e549-fa5c-000031d52302

Camp Royce Finel Work Days Coming Up

There will be a work party out at Royce Finel this Saturday (March 14th) from 8:30 am until no later than 3:30 pm.  We will be clearing the trail and service road (top of the hill to the parade ground).  We will meet up at the trail head in Carnahan Park (by the dock).  This work will make it easier for troops hiking out to the camp and delivery of construction materials in April for repairing the rest of the vandalism damage.

Bring loppers, shears, gloves, lunch, and water bottle (water will be turned on at the camp).  Adults can bring weedeaters or brush cutters.

Our second Royce Finel camp work day is on Saturday April 25th, 2015.

Meet 9AM in Camp. We will be installing Four more Metal support poles and supports
for the Tarp Shelter closet to the Trail coming in to Camp. Also need older Scouts to brush out quite a bit around this Camp to open it up
a little more for Tent sites. If we have a lot of help will also cut brushes back on service road.
Please bring loppers, Hedge shears, Gloves, Sack Lunch. Water will be on in Camp.
Our Councils Camp Facilitiies Director will be helping us out. Andy  Herold is in charge of all the Camps in the Cascade Pacific Council,
so its special that he takes the time to come and help us out.
Much help is appreciated.
Thanks Tom

The Troop partnered again with Necanicum Watershed for this annual event. Once collected the trees were taking to The Mill Pond off Avenue S in Seaside. Those trees  are now fish habitats.

Troop 642 received a little help from a few Webelos from Pack 540 who were working on their World Conservation Badge.

Local Scouts Fill and Deliver Food Boxes Before Christmas

Members of Pack 540 met at the Cannon Beach American Legion at 8am on December 23rd. They were tasked with filling and delivering food boxes with the Cannon Beach American Legion and Cannon Beach Fire Department.

They started by helping the Legion finish filling the boxes that contained canned food (some of which those scout collected during Scouting For Food earlier in the month) bread, vegetables, candy, turkeys, bacon, eggs and milk. The filled boxes were loaded onto a UHaul and driven to low income neighborhoods to be deliverd to families who needed them.

While delivering boxes they were followed by Erik Bengel for an article in the Cannon Beach Gazette. http://www.dailyastorian.com/CBG/news/20141223/cannon-beach-volunteers-help-low-income-folks-have-a-merry-christmas

Their work wasn’t quite done yet.  As soon as they finished they headed to the Seaside Fire Department. Once there they loaed up the close to 700lbs of food collected for Scouting for Food in Seaside and delivered it to the Seaside Food Bank.

It was a great way to start the day.
