Great Article on Evergreen Aviation from Scouting Magazine’s Blog

evergreen-2013-camporee-pic

There’s tons to see inside the Evergreen Aviation & Space Museum near Portland, Ore.

But it’s what’s outside that caught my eye.

The museum, located in McMinnville, just opened a new designated Scout camping area. That means Scouts can set up their tents among oak trees right off the museum’s parking lot and then walk over to the museum during the day.

Once there, they can check out displays like the original Spruce Goose, movies in the museum theater, merit badge classes, or the “educational waterpark” with its 10 waterslides that teach visitors about the power of water.

No Scout camping area is complete without a great gateway, and, as you can see above, this has it. The gateway prominently displays the Scout Oath and Scout Law, but its underlying message is that “Scouts are welcome here.”

The photo was sent to me by Jackie Dannemiller of the Cascade Pacific Council. The Scouts and Scouters pictured recently gathered for the 2013 Wapiti District Camporee, an event so fun that Jackie couldn’t help but share the news with everyone.

If your unit will be in Oregon soon, Jackie recommends you stop by the Evergreen Aviation and Space Museum — and, of course, spend a couple of nights camping in the museum’s backyard.

Are You “Able to Leap Off Tall Buildings in Support of Scouting”?

over the edge
Are you daring enough to participate? Enjoy a breathtaking view and experience a life-changing adrenaline rush!

The Boy Scouts of America, Cascade Pacific Council will hold this unique event for the second time in the Portland metropolitan area. Proceeds from the event assist the council’s mission of preparing more than 33,000 young people for a lifetime of adventure, learning, service and leadership. Last year 46 participants (Edgers)raised over $100,000 in support of local Scouting programs.

BE AN EDGER! Only 43 Edger spots remaining so act fast! No rappelling experience is needed – just a brave spirit and desire to have fun. Each participant is required to raise a minimum of $2,500.

TOSS YOUR BOSS! If rappelling 42 stories down the U.S. Bancorp Tower is not your thing, organize your coworkers and find a die-hard thrill seeking supervisor or other top executive in your company who will agree to go over the edge.

IT’S EASY! Register online at  www.cpcbsa.org/edge

Once you register, use our resources to create your personal message and start collecting donations on-line to begin the race to secure your rappel!   Make sure to visit our Facebook page too!

Long-range property plan task force created

Volunteer council leaders have assembled a Long Range Property Plan (LRPP) Task Force to study and develop a long-range plan for council properties.  The group of several dozen members, chaired by former council president Gene Grant, recently met to kick-off the effort and make plans for the coming months.

A primary objective of this group is to collect as much member input and opinions as possible, and to openly and actively communicate with members throughout the process, which should take about one year to complete.  One of the first steps will be a member survey, which will be released mid-June.  Members will also be invited to participate in at-camp chat sessions this summer, and encouraged to provide input to the process.

If you’d like to learn more, please visit the long-range property plan webpage .

You may also like to subscibe to a newsletter to keep informed of the long-range plan process.
